Courses/Tutorials at SIGCHI sponsored conferences

Goal for courses at SIGCHI sponsored conferences is to offer a set of required courses that must be offered during SIGCHI sponsored conferences, in particular, the CHI conference. The primary goal is to ensure that the course program offers a set of basic introductory courses every year, and a balanced offering of more advanced courses spread out over a span of subsequent years.

The following course areas must be covered as part of the course program. If the required course areas are not covered by a course proposed as part of the standard course submission process, instructors must be invited to teach (and if necessary, develop) appropriate courses.

All SIGCHI sponsored conferences should aim to offer courses during their conference that introduce their respective area and provide an overview of topics, methods and special approaches. If no courses are offered at the specialized sponsored conference, the steering committee of the respective conference should ensure that courses that represent their field are held at the CHI conference.

Courses at CHI:

Courses that must be provided every year as part of the courses program at the CHI conference are:

  1. An introduction and overview of Human-Computer Interaction (this course should target students new to the field of human-computer interaction and should be at the beginners level)
  2. An overview of Human-Computer Interaction areas, methods and approaches, including an introduction to the concept of usability and user-centered design (this course should target practitioners)
  3. An introduction to qualitative methods in the field of Human-Computer Interaction at the beginners level
  4. An introduction to quantitative methods in the field of Human-Computer Interaction at the beginners level

The course program at CHI has to be balanced so that it enables participants to take a broad array of courses over several subsequent years, including:

    Courses that enable participants to acquire basic competencies (introduction to user experience, introduction to basic technological competences e.g. HTML 5/CSS, introduction to psychology/human factors).
  1. Courses related to all phases of user centered design (analysis, design, implementation, evaluation): at least one course for each year,
  2. Special topics related to the SIGCHI sponsored conferences
  3. Courses related to special areas

The frequency with which a course is repeated over subsequent years should depend on the number of participants estimated for the course.

Balancing of courses targeting at different audiences:

The course program shall be balanced according to the following criteria:

  1. Level of the course: beginners level, intermediate level, expert level
  2. Audience: researchers, practitioners

SIGCHI Certificate for a Set of Courses for Attendees

Once a participant has attended 5 courses within a maximum of three years, they will be eligible to receive a certificate issued by SIGCHI. Attendance will be evaluated by having student volunteers collect signed attendance sheets at the conclusion of each course.
